On your drive to the front gate, you'll notice an old building next to the Bluffs cabins. This one-room school building traces its history to 1895 when Vira (Gregg) Basford started the first school in the Anderson Bend area. In 1908, land was purchased from the Simpsons and a new school was built near Cox Springs. The school burned down twice, but was rebuilt each time by local families.
While Mansfield Dam was being built, most families in this area sold their land to LCRA and moved elsewhere. Two families remaining - the Carltons and the Pearsons - wanted to encourage new families to the area and moved this building to its present location on the J.J. Carlton Ranch in 1940 at a cost of $100. J.J. Carlton and Ivean Pearson were trustees of the school and their descendants still own property in the North Shore area.
The building had no electricity or running water but it did have a lunch room and several teenage students, including Margie Carlton, who cooked lunch each day. The Carlton family provided fresh milk from their cows. Around 1960, the students were all relocated to a building donated by a developer, Dr. Paul Harris and the name changed to Lago Vista School.
Terramesa, The North Shore Heritage & Cultural Society, and former students are currently working to move this building to a permanent location in Lago Vista where it will be restored and open to viewing.
